Academia.edu lets you keep in touch with colleagues and share your latest research. According to the site, over 900,000 research papers have been shared!
You can follow the work of world-famous academics like Steven Pinker and Richard Dawkins, or you can keep up to date on the latest work of colleagues at your university or in your department; for example, here is the listing for the University of Tokyo.
You can also find other users who share your interests (e.g. plasma physics, avian migration, molecular biology and economics). Inside many of the researcher profiles, you can find abstracts or full paper to read, print or download as a pdf version.

A recent news story came to our attention about a mistranslation which has caused some considerable embarrassment to local authorities in Wales, as well as wasted taxpayers’ money! This story illustrates perfectly why you need to be sure you can rely on your translator to communicate with you effectively about your translation!
The story starts like this…
A council official responsible for making a new road sign in English and Welsh didn’t know any Welsh, so he asked a translator to send him a translation of the following road sign:
“No entry for heavy goods vehicles. Residential site only” (which unfortunately was also missing the period from the end of the sentence).
He received an email reply very quickly and proceeded to make the road sign. No-one bothered to check that the Welsh text was correct however… Unfortunately, the Welsh translation he had received actually read
“I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated”.
It was left to Welsh speakers who were passing by the erected road sign to point out the mistake! The sign has now been removed, but not after causing the council much embarrassment, negative publicity and public ridicule.
So, while this is an amusing story for all of us not directly involved, it clearly highlights the need for all parties involved in translation (author, translator and editor) to ensure that the translated text used says exactly what it should say!

While Adidas’ new Jabulani soccer ball created specially for the 2010 World Cup is receiving quite a lot of press, we think this amazing new soccer ball deserves much more attention.
The sOccket is quite simply an ingenious invention – a soccer ball that is a simple, portable generator. It uses an inductive coil mechanism similar to those found in shake-to-charge flashlights: the movement of the ball forces a magnet through a coil that induces a voltage to generate electricity.
The latest version, sOccket 2.0, is much improved: now less than 10 minutes of play yields up to 3 hours of energy for an LED light, and can power appliances such as cell phones as well.
Its designers Jessica Lin, Jessica Matthews, Julia Silverman, and Hemali Thakkar, who studied together at Harvard University, hope that the sOccket will not only help those living without electricity to have access to cheap, clean off-grid electricity, but also that it can ultimately be developed into a global health tool, for example, being used by medical professionals to power mobile phones for use as a diagnostic tool in remote areas.
