Social networking sites are now among the most popular sites on the Web. You can keep in touch with your friends and family on Facebook, receive status updates from Twitter and maintain business contacts on LinkedIn. But did you know there is a social networking site especially for researchers?
Academia.edu lets you keep in touch with colleagues and share your latest research. According to the site, over 900,000 research papers have been shared!
You can follow the work of world-famous academics like Steven Pinker and Richard Dawkins, or you can keep up to date on the latest work of colleagues at your university or in your department; for example, here is the listing for the University of Tokyo.
You can also find other users who share your interests (e.g. plasma physics, avian migration, molecular biology and economics). Inside many of the researcher profiles, you can find abstracts or full paper to read, print or download as a pdf version.
